NAPA VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL FILM CAMP

The NVFF Film Camp, intentionally structured as a two-part program, includes a screenwriting workshop May 18 & 19 at the Napa County Office of Education, followed by a full week of extensive hands-on production June 17 – 21. Instructors for the screenwriting workshop and the weeklong camp are top film professors and teaching assistants from the Pacific Union College (PUC). They will provide expertise at an advanced level not yet offered to high school students in the Napa Valley. Students will have the opportunity to utilize PUC’s state of the art cameras, sound equipment, editing software, and studios.

The finished short films will be featured at a student showcase on Sunday, June 30, at 2 pm at the Cameo Cinema, with an encore screening taking place during this year’s Napa Valley Film Festival (November 13 -17). The Student Short Film Showcase is free to attend and open to all community members.

As a core component of NVFF’s year-round Education & Outreach Programs, this dynamic camp arms students with the tools and instruction to become more confident and proficient storytellers and filmmakers. At the writing workshop, students will learn to write and format a narrative script, and teachers will select scripts for the students to produce. Once scripts are completed during the workshop, the additional month before camp will provide enough timing for script refinements, cast selection, and a comprehensive filming schedule for production. At camp, students will learn about all aspects of the filmmaking process, and, working in teams, take on roles such as Director, Producer, Lighting and Camera Operators, Actor, and Editor during the week of production. Each group will complete a fully developed short film to show to their friends, family, and community.

WHO CAN ATTEND

NVFF Film camps are available to high school students. Students interested in the program must be 13 to 18 years old and reside in Napa, Sonoma, or Lake County, California.

COST: $200

Students will need to plan their own transportation to and from PUC each day and arrange for their own lunch. Registration is limited to 12 students for the workshop and camp. Students must attend both the writing and narrative production sessions and commit to the full week of classes at camp. Reservations are required in advance and space is limited.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

FRIENDS OF THE CAMEO DOCUMENTARY CAMP

The Camp offers a hands-on opportunity to explore the art of filmmaking in a fun, educational, safe and inclusive environment. Camp focuses on students working together and developing the skills to produce their own films and recognizing their own voice. They will work in small groups, developing and producing a short documentary film (pre-production, production and post-production), under the supervision and guidance of PUC film staff. The first two days will focus on pre-production: research, interviewing techniques, and camera basics. Wednesday is production day, on location with our subjects. Thursday and Friday will cover post-production: editing video and sound into a completed short documentary film.

Students must commit to the full week of classes. For questions or scholarship information by contacting cathybuck25@gmail.com.
