Submission Guidelines


U.S. NARRATIVE FEATURES COMPETITION AND ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The selection consists of domestically produced U.S. narrative feature films, 50+ minutes, qualifying for Juried and Audience Awards. These Competition directors take part in NVFF's Artists-in-Residence (AIR) program, presented in partnership with the world-class Meadowood Napa Valley Resort & Spa. Meadowood provides luxury accommodations and industry workshop facilities. Meadowood also underwrites the $10,000 cash prize awarded to the director of the film selected as Best U.S. Narrative Feature. Directors accepted into the workshop program must be able to participate in full; from Tuesday (11/7/2017) afternoon’s welcome wine reception through Sunday (11/12/2017) evening’s Awards Ceremony. Film collaborators, talent, and significant others are also urged to attend. NVFF is not able to guarantee travel assistance/accommodations for other members of filmmaking teams. Due to the highly exclusive nature of this program, films in this category must be making their Northern California festival premieres in order to be considered.

NARRATIVE SHORT FILMS

Narrative short films must be under 20 minutes in length, set in live action or animation, and may be submitted from anywhere in the world. This selection is up for Juried and Audience Awards.


DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILMS

Documentary short films must be under 20 minutes in length, and may be submitted from anywhere in the world. This selection is up for Juried and Audience Awards.


SHORT FEATURES

Short Features are made up of a selection of narrative or documentary films between 20 and 49 minutes in length. These films may be submitted from anywhere around the world and can be either live action or animated. This is a program for those films that are just more than a short, but are not quite a feature. Short features are up for Audience Awards only.


THE LOUNGE

The Lounge Program is named for its unique screening venue and quirky atmosphere. A festival favorite, The Lounge consistently boasts a popular lineup of extraordinary narrative or documentary feature and short films. It is the ultimate hub for edgier content, offbeat filmmaking, and eclectic storytelling at NVFF. This program is made up of both domestic and international films, and is eligible for Juried and Audience Awards. Qualifying feature films must exceed 50 minutes and shorts must not exceed 20 minutes.


SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Each year NVFF programmers select a small set of narrative and documentary features from around the world to be presented outside of the other feature film categories. These films showcase impressive cinematic style and compelling stories deemed significant for inclusion in NVFF’s film program. Special Presentations exhibit a wide variety of niche interest film pairings that revolve around topics such as art, music, culture, or food. The program topics change yearly and the selections may occasionally include short films as well as features. The films is in this program are up for Audience Awards only. Qualifying feature films must exceed 50 minutes and shorts must not exceed 20 minutes.
